How Connecticut Record Stores Are Keeping Doo-Wop Music Alive
Replay Records, Hamden, Conn
With its location right down the street from Quinnipiac University, Replay Records has been nearby for nearly 18 years (but has been around in Hamden since 1989). It sells albums, hundreds of singles (45s), and other audio formats such as CDs and even 8-tracks.
However, amid records and audio formats from the 20th century and beyond lies a vocal group section in front of the 60s Garage and Psych section. This section sells records from groups such as The Flamingos and The Moonglows
"My first interest in pop/rock started in mid-1962." Says owner Doug Snyder. His sister introduced him to pre-British Invasion rock when she brought home singles by Tommy Roe, Del Shannon, and The 4 Seasons. "I dove into the top 40 for the next few years. One of my favorites was The Earl's “Remember Then”, which was considered a part of the Doo-Wop revival of the early sixties, along with the Marcels and Dion & The Belmonts."
Regarding local New Haven doo-wop, it was then in the 70s when Synder remembers it becoming once again popular with Fred Parris' "In The Still of The Nite" polling nationally in the charts.
"This was a source of immense pride, because not many major records came from Connecticut." Snyder continues.
Now, nearly sixty years after his introduction to the doo-wop sound, Snyder sells the genre, with some of the albums being original cuts as others are reissues. In his little vocal group section, wrapped around the corner from the larger classic rock area, holds the same records that "In The Still of The Nite" can be heard on, with the collection of Five Satins records outnumbering other doo-wop albums. On top of this, he also has records from other groups (not from New Haven) such as The Moonglows and The Flamingos.
When asked about how it feels when younger people buying doo-wop and music from a different time period, he replied "I enjoy selling records all the time. But certain things excite me more….when a young person has an interest in an older, obsolete form of music it gives me the satisfaction that there are still people who will curate and expose outdated music."
